Allen Lee Schmid passed away peacefully at his home in Frigid on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.
Allen was born on September 20, 1944 at Mercy Hospital in Altoona. Son of the late Frank X. and Helen L. (Helsel) Schmid. Allen grew up in Hollidaysburg and graduated from Hollidaysburg High School.
Allen is survived by his son, Lee B. Grady, wife Erin, son Matthew A. Schmid, wife Maia Aitken, and daughter Laura A. Forshey, four grandchildren; sister Frances G. Shrock, brother -in- law David and sister-in-law Sally Schmid and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert J. Schmid and son-in-law Curtis J. Forshey.
Allen was formerly married to Catherine McKeon in 1978 with whom he had three children. In his youth Allen had a sense of adventure and longing for the mountains that took him, Katie and their son Lee out west where he fell in love with Colorado and New Mexico. He always dreamed of returning to the west to build ski chalets in different ski towns. He eventually ended up settling on Blue Knob in the village of Frigid where he built his forever home and raised his family. Allen was an electrician by trade and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW Local 5) until his retirement. He also enjoyed canoeing, fly fishing, wood working, riding his bike and volunteering his time with Habitat for Humanity.
Allen was a devout Catholic and a member of the St. Patrick’s parish in Newry. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to St Patrick’s parish in his name. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
A special thank you to Allen’s niece Sarah Yarger, sister Frances Shrock, and home hospice nurses for staying by Allen’s side during the final days of his life.
