Donald L Snowden February 9, 1937 - July 21, 2023

Donald L. Snowden, 86, was born in Beaver Falls, PA, on February 9, 1937, to Lewis Snowden and Faye Klingelhofer Snowden, and raised there with his sisters, Nancy and Sarah. He graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 1959 and served as an officer in the navy from 1959-63. In 1966-67 he traveled for a year throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Egypt.

In 1968 Don met Irmi at a party and fell in love with her as they waded across a shallow area of the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg. They were married in 1970 in the woods near Shingletown Gap, PA. A man of many talents, Don worked for the Human Relations Commission in Harrisburg, as a property manager in State College, in charge of physical plant renovations in New Jersey, and as a plant engineer for Procter & Gamble in Claremont, NH, (1980-2002, until retirement).

Don was always vitally engaged wherever he lived, worked, traveled and volunteered, He built a Danish-designed home, garage, and barn on a hillside in Cornish, NH where they lived until 2010. Don was involved in improving the town and greater community as Chair and member of the Cornish Conservation Commission. He worked to protect land from being developed, thus maintaining the rural nature of the community, wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities. In keeping with this goal, in 2008 Don and Irmi deeded a conservation easement on their land in Cornish to the Upper Valley Land Trust.

In 2010, Don and Irmi moved to Foxdale Village in State College, PA, a Quaker-directed continuing-care retirement community, whose values of equality and simplicity attracted them. He continued helping others--showing movies as a member of the Audio-Visual Committee, fixing and building whatever was needed for other residents in the Foxdale Woodshop, working for environmental justice through advocacy in the greater State College community, and pushing for progress on environmental changes with the Foxdale Green Committee and with the local NVEC group.

Wherever he went, Don created lasting friendships and was the essence of generosity and support for Irmi, family, and friends near and far.

A service of remembrance will be held in the Foxdale Village auditorium on August 4, 2023 at 2:00 pm.
