Nelson Schmoyer

June 10, 1935 — March 3, 2022

Nelson Frederick Schmoyer, Jr., better known as Pete, passed away peacefully at his home in Scattertown on March 3, 2022. He was born June 10, 1935. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 65 years, Donna (Walker). They have two children, Cindy (Scott) Eckenroth and Mindy (Richard) Krulia, Sr.
Pete was the son of the late Grace (Thomas Schmoyer) Mando and Nelson Schmoyer, Sr., but was raised by his grandparents whom he called mom and dad, Lulu Belle (Kelly) and J. Wright Thomas with his sister, Connie (George) Walker and his uncle, John Thomas, and aunts, Ruth Moralli, Pearl Sandoval, Bernice Hubbard, and Martha Mervine. Connie and Martha survive.
Pete is also survived by six grandchildren, Richard (Sarah) Krulia, Jr., Stephanie Fera, Amanda Krulia (Sean) Holjencin, Casie Fera (Brad) Buhler, Nena (Chris) Blaszkowski, and Lauren (Keith Doty) Eckenroth, and his great grandchildren, Louie and Franco Krulia, Emma, Conrad, and Pete Buhler, and Amelia and Olivia Blaszkowski. In addition, he is survived by various cousins, nieces and nephews who were very special to him including John “JT” Thomas and Timmy Senior, the sons he never had. He is also survived by his furry companion, Lady, who enjoyed going for rides or walks and always being by his side. He will be greatly missed by all.
Pete retired from Keystone in 1997 and had previously worked at the B&O Railroad. Those who knew him will remember Pete as being warm, generous, and quick to joke. He always had a smile on his face. He loved to debate politics or really any subject regardless of his position—the debate was the fun. Pete could often be found working on and cleaning cars, collecting guns, feeding his birds, and spending time with family and friends. Pete enjoyed many Tuesday nights with his “Bud Night Boys.” Pete was always willing to lend a hand with a project as he could fix just about anything and was a steady force in the lives of those who knew him. In his later years, some of his best times were spent as “Papa Pete” with his great grandsons feeding the fish, riding his four-wheeler, or in whatever activity they dreamed up. He was a lifetime member of the Penfield Firemen’s Club and the NRA.
In addition to his parents, aunts, and uncles, he was proceeded in death by his brother-in-law George Walker who will enjoy his company in heaven.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Penn Highlands Hospice, whose nurses and staff brought kindness and comfort to Pete and Donna at the end of his life.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 7, 2022 at the Weedville Wesleyan Church at 11:00 AM with Pastor Byron Kleppinger officiating.
