Thomas Robert Young, 64, of Roaring Spring, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, at his home, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Sept. 7, 1958, in Altoona Hospital, a son of the late Francis and Marjorie (Fleming) Young. Raised in the Upper Reese area of Hollidaysburg, he and his brothers delivered the Altoona Mirror to neighbors through their school years. He graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1976, where he played in the band, and he regularly attended class reunions.
Mr. Young worked as a truck driver, handling deliveries for McLaughlin Oil for many years, then many more as a concrete mixer driver and in shop maintenance with New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co., until his retirement this month. He was a life long member of the Juniata Valley Gospel Church, and recently began attending the Martinsburg Church of God.
A loving father and grandfather, he had a ready sense of humor that lasted all his days. He enjoyed camping, rollar skating, travel, local history, the Steelers and Pirates, and collecting model trains.
He is survived by daughter Sarah Connor (Timothy), grandchildren Dylan Hughes and Alexis Hughes, and former wife Mary Young, all of Roaring Spring; brothers Dennis Young (Missy) of Duncansville and Ken Young (Robin) of Bremerton, Wash.; brother-in-law Larry Hengst of Imler; aunt Shirley Young of Menifee, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Shirley Young and Nancy Hengst.
At the request of Mr. Young, there will be no public service. Interment will be at Geeseytown Cemetery. In his honor, donations may be made to the Martinsburg Church of God or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Memorial service will be held at a later date
